What is Bikes for Africa?
Bikes for Africa is World Vision’s new campaign to get 30 million bikes into Africa in the next 10 years. In partnership with World Bicycle Relief, leaders in providing comprehensive bicycle programs for disaster assistance and poverty relief, Bikes for Africa is working to empower individuals, their families and their communities.
 Imagine how life changes for an individual living in Africa where walking to the market takes up to half of the day and you are only able to bring a few products with you each time you go. The productivity increase provided by a bicycle is astounding. World Vision and World Bicycle Relief are looking to revolutionise transportation in Africa by providing long-lasting, durable bikes that can carry up to 220 pounds, boost mobility and economic opportunities by 400% and ensure sustainable access to education and healthcare. World Bicycle Relief used its expertise in the industry to create a longer-lasting, rugged bicycle that will last much longer than the bikes currently available and backed by an in depth maintenance training program.
We are working through World Vision’s microfinance subsidiary, VisionFund International, to provide these bikes to micro-loan recipients. The money that is generated through the revolving loan fund goes back to purchase more bikes and provide more loans for additional people in each country we take this program.
Today we have over 3,000 bikes on the ground in Zambia and Tanzania. In addition to providing locally assembled bikes, we provide jobs through World Bicycle Relief’s mechanic training program. These mechanics are trained in business and life skills in addition to their advanced knowledge of bicycle mechanics.
